BabyRice Alginate Impression Moulding Powder - the perfect choice for 3D Casting Projects

BabyRice Alginate Impression Moulding Powder - the perfect choice for 3D Casting Projects

BabyRice Fast Set Alginate is used worldwide by professional casting studios due to it's superior clone reproduction qualities and ease of use for the novice caster.  It is specially formulated to capture the finest of lines and tiniest details of the skin, making it perfect for creating impression moulds of 3D objects such as baby hands and feet, pet paws, adult hands, family hands, face and body parts - subjects do not need to keep still for long whilst the alginate mould is setting.  You can even replicate a favourite object, such as an ornament or decorative plasterwork - perfect for preservation, restoration and replication!  Being dental grade, BabyRice Alginate is also perfectly suited for the professional dentistry sector to make detailed impression moulds of gums and teeth.

Skin Safe Ingredients - being mainly derived from seaweed, the alginate is perfectly safe to use on delicate, newborn skin.  BabyRIce Alginate is latex free.  When making impression moulds of body parts with hair/fur, please use a barrier like petroleum jelly to stop hair from getting stuck in the set alginate mould.

Available in large 500g packs, each pack of Alginate is New, Sealed and Fresh with plenty of shelf life (at least 2 years from your purchase date).  BabyRice Alginate complies with EU product safety directives for use in 3D lifecasting and dental applications.

  • Chromatic Colour Changing Alginate makes the process super easy.  The impression powder is white, turns pink when mixing with water, turning back to off-white once set.  After a while, the set alginate impression mould turns back to pink again.
  • 30° Celsius water is needed to mix the alginate.  This temperature ensures the setting times work as indicated in the instructions.  Warmer water makes the alginate set much quicker, cooler water makes it set slower. (Very cold water will stop the setting process completely).  30°C water is the perfect temperature for creating impression moulds of baby hands and feet and other body parts.
  • Mixing time is 1 minute, 30-40 seconds - allowing for an additional 20-30 seconds to immerse hand / foot / subject into the mixture.  The alginate starts to set at 2 minutes and is fully set at 2.5-3 minutes.
  • Blancmange / Jelly texture when set - the set alginate allows for the hand / foot etc. to be easily removed whilst the mould retains its shape and the intricate detailing it has captured.
  • Plaster / Resin / Liquid Wax / Liquid Soap should be poured into your impression mould within 15 to 20 minutes of creation.  If immediate casting is not possible, the alginate mould can be kept for up to an hour or so, as long as it is sealed in a polythene bag or air-tight container along with a damp cloth to keep it moist.
  • BabyRice Fast Setting Alginate Impression Powder will ensure that the finest details are captured in the mould - down to the tiniest lines and finest details of skin.
  • BabyRice recommends Herculite 2 Plaster when making a Plaster cast.  Liquid resin, candle wax and soap can also be poured into the alginate mould - but Herculite 2 plaster will ensure the finest details are replicated for the cast.  You can find a selection of Herculite 2 plaster quantities in the BabyRice Store on Amazon.  You need to fill your impression mould with your intended casting material soonafter making the mould.
  • Full instructions included with each order (in English, German, French & Italian languages)

Sprinkle Alginate into 30°C Water

When mixing 500g or more, always sprinkle the alginate into the 30°C water for mixing.

Chromatic Colour Changing Alginate

The white alginate powder turns pink during the mixing stage.

After 1 minute and 30-40 seconds, you have 20-30 seconds to immerse hand / foot / etc. into the alginate.

The alginate starts to set at 2 minutes.

BabyRice Alginate the No.1 Choice for Life Casting

Life Casting alginate is commonly used to create impression moulds of baby hands and feet, loved ones hands, family hands and pet paws. But you can of course, create a replica 3D cast of other items.

Babies soon grow and to have a 3D cast of their tiny hand and foot makes a cherished keepsake.  But you're never to old to make a beautiful casting keepsake of your loved ones of all ages.

The Best Bit!  Break away the Alginate to Reveal your Cast

When the cast has set, it's time to gently break away the alginate mould from the cast.

Take care when removing the alginate, tiny fingers and toes of the cast are delicate.  If these break off don't panic, parts can be glued back on once the plaster is fully dried.

Baby Hand and Foot Casting

500g Alginate is enough to make:

  • Newborn:  up to 5-6 impression moulds
  • 3-6 month old:  up to 3-4 moulds

As babies vary greatly in size, we recommend you use suitable sized bags or containers for making impression moulds of baby's hand / foot. A container / bag that does not allow too much space around the hand / foot to avoid wasting alginate to fill empty spaces.
