Supplied in boxes of 28 x 500g heat-sealed packs (unlabelled alginate is only available by the box — no smaller quantities). Each pack has a shelf life of at least 2 years from purchase, so you can stock up with confidence.

Chromatic Alginate — Colour Change

This is a chromatic (colour-changing) alginate, which goes through a three-stage colour process:

1. Starts as a white powder
2. Turns pink when mixed with water
3. Sets to an off-white colour

The alginate turns pink again while your cast is setting inside the mould — the plaster cast can sometimes take on a pink hue at this stage, but this disappears completely once the cast dries out. This visual cue is a great way to reassure your own customers that the process is working correctly.

How Quickly Does It Set?

Working and setting times depend on the temperature of the water used, giving you full control over the process:

• Mixed at 30°C, total working time is approximately 2 minutes, with the alginate starting to set at that point and fully set by 2.5–3 minutes. 30°C is ideal for baby hand and foot moulds and other delicate impressions.
• This is a fast-setting alginate, ideal for life-casting work with babies, pets and children, as the subject doesn't need to stay in the mixture for long.
• For more experienced casters, working time can be extended slightly by using cooler water (not cold). To speed things up, increase the water temperature by a few degrees. Note that cold water will slow the setting process and can stop it from setting altogether.

Skin Safe

Alginate's main ingredient is kelp, a form of seaweed, making it completely safe for use on delicate skin. It is "dental grade," the same standard used by dentists for gum and teeth impressions, and conforms to British Safety Standard BS 4269 Pt.2:1991 and ISO 1563:1990.
