BabyRice Alginate Fast Set and Slow Setting

All About Alginate: The Professional Choice for Lifecasting

At BabyRice, we provide high-quality, dental-grade alginate - the same professional material used by dentists to take precise impressions. Whether you are creating a tiny keepsake of your newborn’s hands or a detailed family hand-casting our alginate ensures every wrinkle and fingerprint is captured with stunning accuracy.

Why "Dental Grade" Matters

Not all alginates are created equal. "Dental grade" means the material is refined to a higher standard of purity and consistency.

  • Superior Detail: It picks up the finest textures of the skin.

  • Hypoallergenic & Safe: Our alginate is non-toxic and skin-safe. We maintain full Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to ensure the highest safety standards for you, your little ones, pets and family.

  • Reliability: It is engineered to be "dustless," making the mixing process cleaner and safer for home use.

Fast Set vs. Slow Set: Which should you choose?

Choosing the right speed is the secret to a successful cast. We offer two varieties to suit different projects:

FeatureFast Set AlginateSlow Set Alginate
Mixing TimeApprox. 45–60 secondsApprox. 90–120 seconds
Total Set TimeApprox. 2 minutesApprox. 4–5 minutes
Best For...Wriggly babies and toddlers. The faster it sets, the less time they have to move!Body casting and complex poses. Gives you plenty of time to mix and position hands.

Top Tip: The temperature of your water affects the speed! Use luke-warm 30 degrees centigrade water for the best balance. Cold water will slow the setting time, while warm water will speed it up even further.

The Science Behind the Gel

Alginate is a fascinating, natural material derived from brown seaweed. When the powder meets water, it undergoes a safe chemical reaction that transforms it from a creamy paste into a flexible, rubbery mould.

Key Ingredients Summary

  • Sodium/Potassium Alginate: The natural gelling agent from seaweed.

  • Calcium Sulfate: The reactor that turns the paste into a solid.

  • Trisodium Phosphate: The "retarder" that gives you time to work with the alginate before it sets.

  • Diatomaceous Earth: Provides the strength and body of the mould.

Safety First

Your family’s safety is our priority. Our alginate is designed to be hypo-allergenic and gentle on the skin. Because it is a natural, seaweed-based product, it is biodegradable and easy to clean up with a bit of water. We are happy to provide our Safety Data Sheets upon request for professional casters or concerned parents.
