Got this item to do a cast of mine and my husbands hands for our 10th wedding anniversary. It is a good sized kits with enough supplies to do two moulds of holding hands. You probably could do 3 casts of single hands or 3 sets of babies feet but would need to adapt the container holding the alginate. Our first one was good but we redid it with our wrists touching and stands up perfectly. It is pink whilst drying then goes pure white. We used the silver paint in the kit as this was brought for a tin anniversary so liked the look of metal through the silver colour. The detail is fantastic and shows all the little creases and details on the cast. Only thing I would say is practice putting object into container as the alginate sets very quickly. We used water straight from the tap and not warmed. Overall super impressed and have got more alginate to do our children's hands

This is great fun and, if you prepare a bit before you start, very easy to use and gives very nice results. The alginate is safe (I think it is made from seaweed, though I could be wrong) and even smells rather nice. If you haven't used it before, here are a few tips that I learnt the hard way. First off get a container that you are going to use for your cast (I use a 5L jug for a typical two handed cast, but something like a big plastic pop bottle, with the top cut off, will do for a typical one handed cast). To get an idea of how much alginate and plaster solutions you will need, put your hand/whatever into the empty graduated jug/pop bottle, making sure it doesn’t touch the side or bottom and add water until it reached the top of where you want the cast to stop. (Mark the level). Take your hand out and mark this lower level too. This lower level, gives you roughly how much alginate solution you’ll need for your life cast. The difference between the upper and lower levels (in mL) will give you roughly how much plaster solution you will need to fill it with. (By way of guide, it usually takes about 800mL of plaster solution to do a two (adult) handed cast, as shown in the photo below) Next, get everything ready, before you start, because once mixed, the alginate solution sets hard in just a few minutes, so you need to work quickly. I use 4 parts water to 1 part of alginate (by weight) and mix using an electric wisk in a big bowl (the hardened alginate comes off the blades in hot soapy water). The electric wisk gets the mixing done as quickly as possible (don’t hang about - don’t mix for more than about 20-30 seconds or until the alginate has all gone into the water). Again, just to give a very rough guide, in the 5L jug I used here, I mixed 2.5L of cold tap water with about 600g of alginate. Next quickly transfer this pink solution to the 5L jug/container and then give the sides of the containera good bang to remove as many trapped air bubbles from the alginate as possible ( also bang it down on the counter a few times to try to release bubbles that way). Position the alginate solution somewhere you can comfortably hold your arm steady for the several minutes you’ll need to, while the alginate sets (I have found putting it on the seat of a chair, is a good height for me, personally). Then immerse the hands in it. The alginate sets in about 3-5 minutes, depending on temperature of the water you use and the room temperature. It feels cold as it sets. The colour changes from pink, to a pale pinky grey colour when hard. Loosen your hand by very slowly and gently flexing and wriggling your fingers and wrist. If you are casting two (or more) hands holding, gently release your holds before removing one hand at a time, (ideally starting with the smallest hand, or the outside hands first, one at a time), to minimise the chances of tearing the mould. It feels like your hand it stuck solid, but it is only held in there by suction and you will feel it gradually coming loose, as you wiggle and flex. Be patient and take your time getting your hands out, as you don’t want to tear the mould. This may take several minutes. Once your hands are free. Prepare the plaster; add the plaster one spoonful at a time, like you were adding sifted flour to a cake mixture, across the whole surface of the water, to allow it to sink and soak evenly as it sits in the water (don’t just quickly “spoon” it in like you would sugar to a hot drink, as the plaster tends to clump in the water if you do this. Also, I found adding the plaster increased the water volume by about 70% (ish), so make sure you have a large enough mixture containing to take the increase in volume, once the plaster has been added and have still plently of room to give it a good stir at the end). Once all the plaster has been added to the water, allow it to just sit and “soak” for a minute or so. Give it a good stir and then tap the sides firmly to help the trapped air bubbles rise to the surface of the solution. Leave it a minute or so, the let the air bubbles rise. I usually tap the bottom firmly on the counter top to help them rise). Then, pour the plaster solution, at an angle into the mould, making sure you remove all the air pockets trapped by half filling with plaster and then tilting the alginate mould to let any air escape. Then fill to the top with plaster, give the sides of the container a few more solid thumps to release any air trapped in the mould and allow to set. (Also, on very big casts, as it sets, you may see water coming to the top of the mould, if you haven’t stirred the plaster solution well enough. When this happened to me, I just removed this excess with a paper towel and filled the mould up with a few more ML of plaster) After a few hours, remove the alginate mould from the jug, or whatever. Now comes the fun part! Carefully remove the alginate covering the plaster cast (it feels quite rubbery, but comes away easily enough, after making a couple of slight cuts in it with a sharp knife). It does take a bit of time to get all the small pieces of alginate out from the small nooks and cranies of the cast. In fact, this can quite fiddly. I initially used a thin sharp knife to remove these (but found it tended to mark the soft plaster, if I wasn’t very careful), but then bought some plastic modelling/sculpting tools to use instead, which I found worked really well. At this stage, the plaster cast is set but still quite moist on the outside, so you can remove any little plaster nodules on the surface, before allowing to fully dry. One final suggestion, to get used to doing this, I started with a very small scale trial, just using a plastic disposable cup full of the alginate solution and casting a couple of fingers. I found this really helpful and gave me confidence before “scaling up” to do larger pieces. It’s good fun and the amount of detail you get in the plaster casts is remarkable. Recommended

A beautiful keepsake....we had fun .....the only negative was the instructions, I researched quite a bit and decided to go off general measurements on the net......so to make one adult double hand cast I used just over 5pints (about 5.3pints) of water to x2 bags of the Alginate........I used it straight out of the tap ...this cold temperature gave me more mixing time ....it does set quick so be 100% set up ready........both my casts have bubbles in them a bit but I put that down to inexperience with the materials....rushed the mixing a bit .....however once painted you can hardly see them .......as for the odd lump or air bubble these pick off easily.......I have to say fantastic product maximum WOW factor.....little tip .....buy a 5L bucket and a cheap 5L water bottle .....they are perfect for a double hand cast.........
